iPhone 14 listing lukewarm, depreciation rate higher than iPhone 13
On October 2, SellCell analyzed data based on the average trade-in value of more than 40 repurchasers and came up with data showing that the depreciation rate of the iPhone 14 model is more than twice that of the iPhone 13 compared to the same period last year.
The data shows that within 10 days of launch, the iPhone 14 depreciated an average of 38.4 percent, compared to 18.2 percent for the iPhone 13 last year, and even the iPhone 13 mini depreciated by just 20.3 percent over the same period.
Although the 14 Plus is only available today, the aftermarket price of the device is already in place, showing an expected depreciation rate of 38.6 percent for the device, the highest in the past two years.
External analysis suggests that the main reason is still the imbalance between the configuration and price of the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, as well as the small gap with the iPhone 13 series, which generates little consumer demand.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max is doing significantly better, with a depreciation rate 1.8% lower than last year’s 13 Pro Max. Overall, depreciation rates for the iPhone 14 Pro series are similar to those of the iPhone 13 Pro series, showing similarly strong demand.
iPhone14Pro models are in strong demand, exceeding sales expectations
The iPhone 14Pro series’ signature feature “Smart Island” and new UI interactions have been well received by consumers, as evidenced by strong pre-sale numbers. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo published the latest iPhone 14 offline pre-order survey on the 9th, which shows that pre-orders for Apple’s high-end products are more popular in the early stages. The iPhone 14 Pro series accounts for about 85 percent of the order allocation in China, and the iPhone 14 Plus order allocation is about 5 percent. According to Honolulu eCommerce Market Monitor data, iPhone 14 Pro and 14 ProMax pre-orders are up 56 percent compared to last year’s 13 Pro series, while iPhone 14 and 14 Plus pre-orders are down about 70 percent compared to iPhone 13, in sharp contrast.
Based on this phenomenon, Apple has decided to increase production orders for the iPhone 14Pro series. According to SAMMOBILE today, citing THEELE, Sam sung originally planned to produce about 130 million iPhone panels, which has been increased to about 150 million, meaning that the number of new orders for the iPhone 14 series is about 20 million.
New EU regulations passed, iPhone 15 will change the USB-C interface
On October 4, 2022, the European Parliament plenary session, with 602 votes in favor and 13 votes against the bill on the unification of portable smart device charging interface passed. The new regulation states that starting in 2024, USB type-C will become the standard charging interface for smartphones, tablets, e-readers, keyboards, computer mice, GPS devices, digital cameras, headphones, handheld video game consoles and portable speakers sold in the EU.
The official adoption of the new law means that the interface replacement of consumer electronic devices has made a breakthrough across several years, and also means that the iPhone in Europe must abolish the Lightning interface that has been in use for 10 years.
The following Apple products still using the Lightning interface must switch to the USB-C interface by the end of 2024 in order to comply with the new law.
- iPhone 15: The iPhone 15 is expected to launch in the fall of 2023 and could see Apple switch to a USB-C charging port on the iPhone 15 models at the earliest, and no later than the iPhone 16 series.
- Entry-level iPad: the only iPad that still uses the Lightning connector.
- AirPods charging case:All AirPods cases still use the Lightning connector.
- Accessories:MagSafe battery packs, Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad, Magic Mouse, EarPods, and Beats products.
The EU Parliament’s move is mainly from the environmental point of view, the charging interface is not uniform will cause waste of resources, when consumers switch between Android and Apple, will not be able to reuse the charging cable, resulting in more unused or end-of-life chargers in the hands of consumers.
The EU estimates that 11,000 tons of electronic waste is formed each year by thrown away and unused chargers. The unified charging interface will help people save 250 million euros a year in charger spending, reduce 1,000 tons of electronic waste and 180,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gas emissions.
From the current point of view, the trend of unified interface has been unstoppable, before the bill officially takes effect, Apple has enough time to respond, will it follow the provisions of the full switch to the USB-C interface? Or simply cancel the charging interface directly launched wireless charging? In any case, for Apple, which has been advocating innovation and practicing innovation, we can continue to look forward to it.
